Manistee High School’s science Olympiad team traveled to West Ottawa High School to compete in the West Ottawa science Olympiad invitational. Over 20 schools brought 31 teams for the days competition in 23 different science knowledge and application events.
Overall the Manistee team came in 10th. The Manistee squad had plenty of opportunity to cheer as a number of their teams were called up to claim medals and ribbons for a top 6 finish. Taking firsts were the teams of Laura Lindgren and Joe Linke in Sounds of Music, and John Phillips and Patrick Meaghar in Herpetology. Just missing top honors with a second pace in electric vehicle was the team of Trent Schmeling and Chris Engstrom. Rounding out the teams collecting medals was the rocks and minerals team of John Phillips and Becky Hodson.
Receiving a ribbon for their fourth place was the team of Corey Ernst and John Phillips. Also receiving a ribbon was the team competing in the food science event, Joe Linke and John Phillips. Other Manistee teams just missing receiving awards for their finishes were the remote sensing team of John Phillips and Trent Schmeling (8th) , write-it-do-it team of Becky Cameron and Mallory Barkholz (8th), and the disease detective team of Katie Dooley and Seth Schneider (9th) Coach Northrup was happy with his teams finish and individual results, but he was especially happy when looking over his teams results and come upon the name of one senior, John Phillips. “John has worked hard, putting in time studying and working with his partners, also He helps out with the middle school team, which ends up making him stronger in his events.”
This year Manistee High took 2 teams to the invitational for the first time. Coach Northrup stated that although Manistee was unable to field a full second team, He was glad that He had the opportunity to give every team member a chance to compete. “I really believe that getting more kids involved will make our team stronger. I am impressed by the effort and results of our alternates. We had Katie Dooley step in for Kim Barker who had a college visit, and out alternate write-it-do-it team of Becky Cameron and Mallory Barkholz place 8th.” Because of the limited number of alternates, some had to compete in events without the benefit of a partner. “Christian Parkes had to compete in two events by himself, and gave a good showing.”
The next competition for the science Olympiad team will be regionals March 22 in Harrison.
