MAPS will be asking voters to approve of a 0.95 sinking fund millage for 3 years on May 8, 2012. This would generate about $475,000 per year for 3 years, for a total of approximately $1.4 million. This revenue would be used to replace the 45-year old roof on the current Kennedy Elementary (former middle school) and to tear down the condemned old school building next to the current Kennedy Elementary. Besides leaking, the roof on Kennedy Elementary needs structural work to bring it up to current codes. Besides being a community eyesore, we are concerned that the old building next to Kennedy will become a safety hazard to students if it is not demolished soon. None of the revenue generated from the sinking fund can be used for employee salaries and/or benefits. An average home in Manistee with a taxable value of $50,000 would be assessed $47.50 per year for three years, or about $3.95 per month. April 9th is the last day to register for the May 8th election. Please make sure that you are registered in the MAPS school district and please place May 8th on your calendar.
TaxCalc® estimates the after tax impact of millage backed proposals by considering the Michigan's homestead tax credit and the federal income tax deduction of property tax. Some Taxpayers may receive part of the property tax increase back in the form of an increased tax credit. TaxCalc® is an efficient tool for Taxpayers to obtain this valuable information.

5 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW A NEW DEFINITON OF PROFICIENT ON STATE REQUIRED TESTS
Tuesday, 31 January 2012 14:12
1. Each year, public school students in grades 3-9 take the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test and 11th graders take the Michigan Merit Exam (MME). 2. The Michigan State Board of Education recently approved new MEAP and MME “cut scores” for Mathematics, Reading, Science and Social Studies. A cut score is the score that separates test takers into various categories, such as advanced, proficient, partially proficient and not proficient. 3. The new cut scores are higher and “raise the bar” for our students. They are intended to be a better measure of student progress toward being career and college ready. 4. While we anticipate an initial decline in the number of students reported as “proficient,” we are confident this change will be temporary due to ongoing school improvement efforts and student support. 5. If your student is reported as “not proficient,” it does not mean that your student isn't gaining academic skills or is falling behind. It means that on the day of the test, your student was not yet proficient on the material being tested. Several other measures are used in our district throughout the year to insure that your student is making academic progress.
We maintain high standards for our students and their test scores are consistently among the highest in the state. We anticipate this trend will continue even with the new cut scores.
This video provides a look at the new State of Michigan cut scores for the MEAP and MME tests. It explores how they’ve been applied, how they may impact schools and students, and the concepts of career and college readiness.

Insurance Rider for PowerLearning Laptop
Monday, 19 December 2011 13:32
We have been very pleased to see the number of accidental damage repairs drop since switching to the Apple computers. The machines are more durable and the clear Speck cases provide an added measure of protection for the machines. Unfortunately when the machines do get damaged, the cost to repair them is higher than with the Dell laptops. This in tandem with the common increase in accidental damage to the laptops over the Holiday break means that now may be a very good time to add a rider on your home owners insurance to cover accidental damage to the PowerLearning laptop assigned to your student(s). The cost is typically fairly low (less than $30/year) with less than a $100 deductible. Most insurance providers need to know the model of the computer (Apple MacBook 13.3"/2.4-CTO/4GB) and the cost of the machine ($1,069).
PowerLearning laptops should always be transported in an approved laptop case. It is not acceptable to transport the laptop in a backpack (without the case) or other bag. The clear Speck cases on the laptops should always be on the laptop. The Speck cases provide an additional level of protection for the machine. If a student's machine is scratched up because it has not been in its Speck case the student will be charged for the damage. Additionally, if a student removes the rubber feet from the Speck case, they will be charge to replace the Speck Case. Lastly, please remind your student that they are never to eat or drink around the machine. If a machine is damaged do to food or liquid being spilled on it, the student will always be charged for the repair of the laptop.

Due to federal mandates full paid student lunches will increase $0.10 for 2011-12 school year. Breakfast prices will remain the same. Student breakfast prices are $1.00 for full paid and $0.30 for reduced. Student lunch prices are $1.85 for full paid and $0.40 for reduced. We have also adopted a "NO CHANGE POLICY". For example: If a student brings in a $5.00 bill their lunch account will be charged for their purchases and the $5.00 will be deposited into their account. This will help speed up the line, eliminate having large amounts of change on hand and there will be less chance for error. Students may purchase a second lunch entree for $1.75 and extra milk for $0.50. Please be reminded that there is a "3 lunch charge" policy. Any student who owes for more than three lunches will be given the option of our "overdrawn" lunch choice.
