 A MESSAGE FROM MR. HUBER

Mr. Huber

Welcome to Manistee High School - the high school of choice in Manistee County!

As always, our goal at Manistee High School is to provide the utmost in educational opportunities for our students - utilizing both our  state of the art  facilities and outstanding staff.  Whether running a host of challenging classes or providing support systems along the way, we strive to do it the Chippewa way - the right way - every day.  We look forward to another great year full of our traditions of academic and activities excellence!  Our commitment to your expectations continues to make Manistee Area Public Schools the schools of choice.

BECOME A PARTNER IN YOUR STUDENT'S EDUCATION!

The first place you'll notice our commitment to excellence is right here on our outstanding web page.  Please take advantage of our current array of quick links to become a partner in your student's education by accessing our academic calendar, a variety of academic and activity schedules, and other educational resources.   You will also want to make sure you have set up your account to PowerSchool.  This interactive tool lets you see what and how your student is doing in every single class, and is a quick and easy way to communicate with his or her teacher.  For graduation requirements, acadmic information, building and athletic policies and more click on the MHS Handbook to the right.

For a look at our SEASONAL SPORTS SCHEDULE, click on the Activities tab above.  Also, make sure you refer to our Upcoming Events and Announcements sections.  Each will provide you with the latest information for both educational and activity opportunities.

We would also like to remind both students and parents of our newly installed STUDENT E-MAIL accounts.  You can expect the office and other MHS groups to increasingly send information using these accounts.  Students may check their accounts utilizing the school network, clicking on the tab to the right, or visiting www.manistee.org.

You may have also heard of our recent efforts to purchase enhancement items for the state-of-the-art MHS Auditorium.  Please look under the quick links for the Auditorium Enhancement tab to see how you can be part of this ongoing effort to support the long tradition of excellence of MHS performing arts.

For information on the beautiful Paine Aquatic Center, click on the Community Pool tab on the right.

Finally, be sure to check out one of our favorites - our Featured Alumni link located in the Alumni tab above.  Here you'll see stories of past students who help to generate our Chippewa Pride every day. We continue to be proud of the great things our students achieve beyond MHS.  If you know of an alumni who should have his or her story told, please e-mail me at ahuber@manistee.org.

 PowerLearning Scholarship

Donations for the PowerLearning Scholarship Program:

For those families finding the PowerLearning fee to be a financial burden in these tough economic times, we have set up the means to allow their students to fully share in the success of PowerLearning. The fee is required in order to cover the necessary insurance for a student to be able to take the laptop home.  While it is not mandatory that students have computer access at home, being able to take home the laptop for homework and studying does increase student’s educational opportunity.

Individuals and organizations can help to improve the PowerLearning experience for needy students by donating to the PowerLearning Scholarship Program. An individual students can be sponsored for as little as $30/year.

MHS is always willing to work with families struggling to pay the PowerLearning fee.  In order to become eligible for the scholarship, parents will need to fill out an in-take form (similar to what is used for free and reduced lunch) and will then be asked to provide a statement regarding the need of the family.

If you are interested in donating or have questions please contact the high school office at (231) 723-2547 or by emailing Andy Huber at ahuber@manistee.org.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Counselor's Corner
Be sure to check the new Counselor's Corner newsletter located under the Information tab.
MHS Swim Team

During the 2009-10 school year Manistee High School will sponsor varsity girls and varsity boys swimming and diving teams. The teams will compete as members of the Coastal Swimming Conference. Other teams in the conference are Ludington, Spring Lake, South Haven, Muskegon Catholic Central, and Fremont High School.

The girl’s season is in the fall with the first practice on August 12, 2009. The MHSAA Girl’s State Meet is in November. The boy’s season begins November 15, 2009 and the MHSAA Boy’s State Meet is held in March 2010.

All Manistee High School girls and boys are encouraged to join the swimming and diving teams. You don’t have to swim fast to join the team – we will teach and coach you to get better. If you would like a competitive team experience why not join the swimming team.

And, in addition to swimming, there are opportunities to compete in the springboard diving events. We encourage individuals who like tumbling, gymnastics, ballet, cheerleading, acrobatics, dance and other sports to join the diving team. You don’t need any previous experience – we will teach you how.
